Why are Assessments Important?
Assessments are crucial in preschool because they help us understand how each child is progressing. At Little Scholars, we assess our students three times a year: in the fall, winter, and spring.
These assessments let us see what they’re good at and where they might need extra help. By doing this regularly, we can adjust our teaching methods and keep parents in the loop about their child’s growth. It’s all about setting them up for success in the future!
How We Developed Our Own Assessment
I went on a wild goose chase for years trying to find the perfect assessment, but it was like searching for a needle in a haystack! I found bits and bobs of ones I kinda liked, but nothing that ticked all the boxes for Little Scholars. So, we decided to roll up our sleeves and make our own! Our assessment isn’t just about grades; it also dives into important skills like behavior, physical health, and how kids are developing emotionally.
At our school, most students join us for a two-year adventure. The first year is all about diving into the wonderful world of socializing with other kids, gaining independence from mom and dad, and mastering the art of listening and following directions.
Of course, we sprinkle in some academic skills along the way! We always reassure parents that whatever their little ones soak up in that first year will lay a solid foundation for their journey into KPREP the following year.
Academic Assessment
Our academic assessment keeps a close eye on several key skills throughout the year. These include alphabet recognition, number recognition, color and shape recognition, counting, reciting the alphabet, knowing the months of the year, and spotting patterns.
Essential Skills Assessment
Our essential skills assessment keeps tabs on various crucial areas of development. These include approaches to learning, social and emotional growth, physical development, language development, and communication skills. By closely monitoring these aspects, we ensure a well-rounded approach to nurturing our students’ overall development and readiness for the challenges ahead.
In our assessment, we also have a sheet where students write their names and draw pictures of themselves. This helps us see how they express themselves and their fine motor skills. Additionally, we include a letter to parents as a cover for each child’s assessment. This letter keeps parents informed about their child’s progress and strengthens the bond between our school and families.
